Body Treatments
Body Treatments
Our skin is our largest organ, performing several functions, including protecting us from invasion by foreign substances and serving as the transfer point for the release of toxins from our bodies. Body treatments such as wraps and scrubs are an all-natural way to enhance and moisten your skin and detoxify the body.
Body Wraps
Body wraps are designed to improve the texture and appearance of the skin. The benefits of body wraps may include body contouring, detoxification, boosting of the lymphatic system and metabolism, temporary inch loss by reducing excess water weight, skin tightening, and skin softening.
How Are Body Wraps Performed?
The two most common ways body wraps are performed are:
- Clients have their torso, legs, arms, and neck wrapped with elastic cloths (either dry when wrapped or pre-soaked with body wrap mixture). The cloths are wrapped snugly (though not too tightly), creating a thermal blanket that promotes sweating and aids in the shedding of unnecessary interstitial fluid (fluid located between the small spaces of body tissues).
- Clients are wrapped in sheets soaked in solution or with the solution already applied to their skin (this is most common with mud/seaweed wraps). Sheets are wrapped snugly around the client, followed by a plastic/thermal blanket also promoting sweat and aiding in the shedding of unnecessary interstitial fluid and toxins.
The Benefits of Body Wraps
Body wraps are all-natural, most often containing a mixture of herbs and minerals designed to beautify the skin. Essential oils, mud and sea weed are also used in daily spa body wrap treatments, helping to tone and soften the skin while helping minimize unwanted inches. Results sometimes may be realized immediately. Because toxins and interstitial fluids eventually re-accumulate regular body wraps may provide better long-term benefits.
Here is a summary of what you can expect from a body wrap:
- Body wraps use detoxifying organic materials such as mud, sea weed and aloe vera to draw toxins from the body and soften skin.
- Skin will feel soft and fine lines will lessen after just one treatment.
- Treatments are shown to decrease stress, thereby lowering blood pressure.
- Since the skin is our largest organ, detoxification can have profound effects on our health and sense of well-being.
Body Scrubs
Skin Exfoliation is a type of non-medical health treatment that is designed to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the face and body. The removal of dead skin cells leaves skin smoother and healthier looking. Overexposure to hot and cold weather, low humidity even indoor heating and air conditioning can cause your skin to become dull, dry, scaly, flaky and itchy. Most body scrubs use a blend of oils with fine and coarse grains of salt or other natural ingredients to exfoliate and detoxify the skin. Body scrubs remove the outer dead layer of skin making room for new skin that is silky soft. Body scrubs are coarse enough to remove the dead skin cells without damaging the layers underneath. Scrubs can be done as little as once a week, although scrubs are gentle enough to use as often as you desire.
The Benefits of Body Scrubs
Scrubs are designed to: Exfoliate, Nourish, and Hydrate your skin as well as using essential oils to add the healing benefits of aroma therapy. By scrubbing off the top layer of dead skin cells:
- Your skin will feel smoother.
- Your moisturizer will penetrate easier.
- Helps prevent annoying ingrown hairs and body breakouts.
- The act of rubbing in circular motions, towards the heart also increases circulation.
Granular exfoliant options:
- Salt: All salts will have detoxifying and muscle-relaxing properties. If you exfoliate before you shave you will get a closer shave and cut down on skin irritation.
- Sugar: Sugar scrubs in general are gentler than salt scrubs and don't really have muscle-relaxing qualities but the act of scrubbing in a circular motion does increase circulation.
- Coffee: Coffee is granular and feels nice on the skin but the caffeine has added benefits. Applied topically coffee helps to redistribute fat cells and decrease the formation of cellulite. It also acts as a vasorestrictor, tightening and shrinking blood vessels thereby helping eliminate varicose veins.
Waxing
Waxing is a type of day spa treatment through which body hair is removed by the root. When waxing the back, legs and arms strip wax is most commonly used. For this process a thin layer of hot wax mixture is applied to an area of the body requiring hair removal. A thin cloth or paper section is then applied using pressure atop the wax mixture and removed using a "tearing" motion. This results in the rooting of all body hair in the area in addition to any dead skin cells. For more sensitive areas of the body - eyebrows, lip, nostrils, underarms and bikini areas 'hard wax' is used. This is a wax that dries to a hard finish and requires no cloth or paper strip. Hard wax encapsulates the hair as opposed to 'sticking' allowing less skin removal equaling less pain. Waxing serves as a temporary solution to the problem of hair growth, however, after several years of regimented waxing many clients find hair re-growth slows or stops altogether. Generally your first three waxing treatments need to be done bi-weekly in order to balance the hair growth cycle. Following the initial three treatments it typically can take three to eight weeks for hair to re-grow after waxing.
